About ENEO

ENEO is an equity investor and independent water producer (IWP) that invests in sustainable, decentralized projects that improve access to water and deliver genuine social and environmental impact

ENEO is a new kind of water investor. We believe that decentralized water supply will be one of the key drivers of future growth in the water industry, similarly to the rise of decentralized power production in the field of renewable energy.

As an equity investor and IWP, we support highly efficient solutions that help public or private offtakers achieve sustainable water management under our innovative Water-as-a-Service model. We help our customers externalize their water assets, therefore reducing their CAPEX and OPEX requirements, increasing the visibility of their costs and allowing them to rely on outsourced water expertise.

We focus on bridging the financing gap for small to midsize water infrastructure projects and help bring the latest technological innovations in the water sector to market.

ENEO is a mission-driven company that is committed to shaping a sustainable future. We combine financial returns and stable and predictable cash flows with genuine ESG performance. Social and environmental impact is an integral part of how we do business, and we help our clients strengthen their social license to operate.

Water scarcity – the ‘new normal’

Turning risk into opportunity

By 2030 the world is expected to face a 40% water supply gap; in many places, the demand is already exceeding the sustainable supply. An increasing number of public and private offtakers are facing severe water challenges due to stressed water supply and freshwater degradation.

According to estimates, in the next three decades, the demand for water will increase by 40-50% for the global food system, by 50-70% for the municipal and industrial sector, and by 85% for the energy sector.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2020 has identified water as a ‘top 5 risk’ by severity of impact over the next 10 years. Similarly, BlackRock has that water stress is a growing and underappreciated risk for regional economies and markets – often overlooked by investors. Companies resilient to water stress and other climate-related risks may fetch a premium in the transition to a more sustainable world.

Our water-as-a-service model

Externalizing your water assets

ENEO teams up with leading water developers and world-class technology providers to offer innovative financial and technical solutions that are tailored to each client’s unique profile.

We act as a financial partner offering equity investments in water projects (USD 1 - USD 10M) against a long-term water purchase agreement (WPA) or a service agreement (rental option).

This allows our offtakers to focus on their core business, without having to undertake large capital investments to finance water projects, and at no development risk.

We are committed to helping you realize your business case for decentralized water management and improve your operational resilience.

As an independent water producer, we offer world-class water supply & treatment solutions as part of an integrated offering. We come with the backing of a seasoned team of professionals with extensive experience in water projects and project finance.

One-stop water solutions: we work with you to deliver fully tailored solutions that include all guarantees for a complete peace of mind – flexible, reliable and affordable.

All your water needs in a single water contract that captures all costs – no surprises. No need to invest in financing, building and operating your own water facility – ENEO will finance, install and operate the facility and you only need to pay for the water service.

  • Clients pay for water purchases (USD/m3) under a long-term contract (“WPA”); or

  • Clients pay a monthly water service fee (“Service Agreement” or “Rental Option”)

Solar-powered technology

The most cost-competitive solution today

Solar technology has the power to drive down the levelized cost of desalinated water, creating value for offtakers across their operations through cost savings and reduced carbon emissions.

Technical progress in desalination technology now allows potable water to be produced from sea and brackish water at a very competitive price, using less energy, and with small production units that can be installed closer to end consumers - increasingly dedicated to a single consumer only - with easier and cheaper operation and maintenance (O&M).

Reverse osmosis is the most reliable system for desalination and is considered a proven and stable technology. However, despite technological advantages in energy recovery systems made over the last few years it remains a very energy intensive and high-cost process. At the same time, membrane technology used in reverse osmosis desalination is now close to its thermodynamic limit and has reached its maximum efficiency peak.

At ENEO, we believe the next step to reduce costs, especially for smaller decentralized projects, is to power reverse osmosis systems by renewable energy (especially cost-effective solar PV) in order to further reduce operational costs and capture additional efficiencies that could generate significant overall cost savings and an improved carbon footprint.

Both plug & play and custom-engineered solutions – fully scalable from 10 m3 to 10,000 m3/day

Together with our world-class technology and development partners, we are able to offer fully financed custom-engineered turnkey solutions for offtakers that need large quantities of water (up to 10,000 m3/day). This is particularly suitable for larger projects where ENEO would structure the financing against long term-water supply contracts.

In addition, we have established a partnership with Mascara Renewable Water, an award-winning technology company that has developed OSMOSUN® , the world’s first industrial reverse osmosis seawater and brackish water desalination technology coupled with solar PV energy.

Together we offer a highly agile plug & play containerized rental solution that does not require any CAPEX and that can be rapidly deployed to meet water needs in remote areas that conventional, centralized infrastructure does not reach.

This containerized solution targets daily production needs of 10 to 280 m3 of clean water, with possibility to scale up to 500 m3/day. The containers are fully mobile and can be deployed for both short and long-term purposes.

We are currently working with our partners to extend our range of decentralized solutions beyond desalination to a broad offering of water and wastewater treatment solutions.
